Facebook is expanding its Messenger API to support Instagram messages, so developers and businesses can integrate messages from Instagram into other business applications.
The company announced that the new Messenger API, now available in closed beta, will support automated responses on Instagram for the first time. The company opened the messenger platform to bots back in 2016 and is now looking to accelerate response rates on Instagram by allowing companies to preconfigure automatic responses to some of their most frequent incoming requests.
Facebook has tried in the last few years to combine its various properties – including Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. Last month, the company announced a major milestone as it began enabling Messenger and Instagram users to message each other. While the Messenger API itself does not support cross-app communication, this latest addition will make Instagram more equal as a business communication platform.
Instagram has come a long way since Facebook won $ 1 billion for the purchase of the photo sharing app in 2012. With well over 1 billion users, Instagram is an attractive proposition for companies looking to increase their engagement and sales. Instagram has long been a set of tools for businesses and has become a viable e-commerce platform for consumers to discover and buy goods from retailers.
By opening the Messenger API for Instagram, companies can access customer conversations in applications in their daily workflow, e.g. B. in CRM systems (Customer Relationship Management). This means that messages from a customer can, for example, be displayed alongside their order history.
The updated Messenger API is currently available through a beta program to select developers and companies, including Adidas, Amaro, Glossier, H&M, Michael Kors, Nars and Sephora.
