Amazon Web Services to Deliver Twitter Timelines

Amazon Web Services will provide a global cloud infrastructure to serve Twitter schedules under a multi-year agreement announced on Tuesday.

The social network will leverage AWS’s infrastructure and service portfolio to support the delivery of millions of tweets per day. This is the first time Twitter has used the public cloud to scale its real-time service.

The two companies will build an architecture that extends the on-premises social network infrastructure and uses AWS Graviton2-based instances in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud to run their cloud-based workloads and AWS container services to develop new capabilities and deliver applications consistently across the hybrid infrastructure.

AWS will continue to provide storage, compute, database, and content delivery services to Twitter to help distribute images, videos, and ad content like it has done for more than 10 years through services like Amazon CloudFront and Amazon DynamoDB.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s chief technology officer, said in a statement, “We are excited to be working with AWS to expand the infrastructure that Twitter uses for public conversation as we grow globally. Working with AWS will improve performance for Twitter users by allowing us to deliver tweets from data centers that are closer to our customers while leveraging the arm-based architecture of AWS Graviton2 instances. This collaboration with AWS not only helps us to scale our infrastructure, but also enables us to deploy functions faster when we apply the diverse and growing service portfolio of AWS. “

Matt Garman, vice president of sales and marketing for AWS added, “Twitter’s decision to rely on AWS infrastructure and services for its real-time workloads will help grow and expand its global footprint immediately zoom out without ever affecting the Twitter user experience. By using AWS container services to create a seamless hybrid on-premises and cloud environment, Twitter can innovate and deliver new experiences quickly and cost-effectively. “
